For too long, most of the stories in young adult literature have represented only a small segment of our culture, specifically teens who are white and privileged. Luckily, in recent years, at the urging of groups like We Need Diverse Books, stories representing a wider variety of ethnicities and experiences are finally being published. Giving teens the experience of identifying with book characters similar to them can play a significant, positive role in their quest to discover themselves as individuals and discover their place in the greater world. And I now finally have the opportunity to hand recent, interesting, well-written books to my students featuring authors and characters they can directly relate to. All of the fifty book titles on this list are recent, well-reviewed, and feature authors or characters of color. Thank you in advance for helping me bring these books to my students.
