Students who are anxious, distracted, uncomfortable or worried about having their basic hygine needs met struggle to succeed academically. Cell phones are the biggest battle that teachers face in the modern classroom. With the cell phone locker, I can eliminate the distraction of the screen in a fun, safe way that both builds student trust (since they will have a key to their locker and can still see their lifeline) and addresses the issue. Seat cushions tell the students that I care very deeply about their comfort. If a student feels safe and comfortable, she is ready to tackle her studies! I have also selected a range of colors in order to color code my classroom more effectively for small groups and stations. I am a hands on learner myself. I know how hard it can be to sit through lectures if that is not your learning style. I offer differentiated learning to my students but there are of course times when I will need to address the whole class. In order to promote focus and to more deeply impliment differentiation, I have selected a set of silent fidget toys. This will allow a students to learn with their hands without becoming a distraction to the rest of the class. These toys will also be used as prizes for good work and deescalation strategies. Finally I have included a few bottles of spray deodorant. This has been a big ticket item to have in the classroom. Several students ask me for some deodorant weekly and sticks run out quickly since they cannot be used by more than one person. Spray deodorant can be used over the course of the year by multiple people without presenting any health or safety issues. Students are whole people with a wide range of needs.
