Flexible seating is essential to maximize learning and keep students engaged. Students often ask me to sit in different places in the room. They like to work with students other than who is sitting next to them. Both the rug and the flexible seats will provide this. Having a choice empowers the students to make decisions for themselves. A rug is a great place where I can have my Morning Meeting. During this time the class discusses how to solve classroom problems. Morning Meeting is a time when my students come together and learn how to be compassionate and manage emotions. It is a place we sit and talk about what is going well. At the rug, we can strengthen our social-emotional learning. The classroom environment plays a vital role in creating a positive climate conducive to learning. I also like to differentiate instruction, so a rug is a great place to gather and have the lesson modified for students who need it. Also, the flexible seats are a comfortable place where students can read to one another and work on solving math problems.
