Our calming space, The Turtle Room, is limited to a gym mat. Our school meets criteria for Title 1 funding but does not have money available to remodel the room nor provide various calming tools to our students. The calming tools that I have selected will help students by giving them the opportunity to learn how to self-regulate with adult support. Specifically, students will be encouraged to choose a calming tool and/or strategy to assist with emotional regulation. With the identified calming tool, students will complete a calm down routine that includes trauma-informed and restorative practice strategies. The goals for The Turtle Room are to teach and model coping skills for emotional regulation, as well as to decrease missed instructional time. The Turtle Room will provide students a safe place, as well as calming tools, in order to help students self-regulate and in turn, process their feeling(s) in order to be ready to learn in the classroom.
