It is our school's belief that students can and will excel in an environment that is tailored to their evolving needs. We focus on differentiating instruction so that all students can have the opportunity to succeed. One strategy I use to differentiate is through the implementation of stations and one of the stations is having students with me for intervention. During Math or English Language Arts intervention, students use small whiteboards, notebooks, and/or lined paper to show their work. However, most whiteboards are falling apart, occupy needed space in the back table, and getting students ready for these activities takes up valuable time. These stations allow me to place students in flexible groups that rotate every 20-25 minutes depending on time and allow me to level the work according to the needs of my group of students. For example, for my group of English Language Learners, it is critical to building vocabulary in the target language and the use of pictures, models, and visuals for instruction helps push students in the right direction. I feel that having a collaborative whiteboard table can feel like a grand experiment and deploying a writeable surface for students during intervention time is a great way to utilize the potential that our learning environment holds. In addition, untapping the potential of our learning environment with a whiteboard table will definitely enhance teaching and promote learning, help meet students' diverse needs, help save paper and time, help make their thinking visible more readily, enabling them to share and discuss each others' ideas, and ultimately enhance their understanding across the curriculum areas.
