Students in the AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) classes will have the opportunity to visit area colleges. They will take campus tours, sit in on college classes, talk with student panels and admission representatives, and experience life on a variety of campuses. While the experience of being on a college campus is invaluable to any student working towards college, this experience is out of reach for many of my students. Students from single parent or low income households, students from exceptionally busy or chaotic families, and students who will be first generation college students often do not have the opportunity to visit a variety of colleges. In order to encourage students from commonly underrepresented populations to strive for, and eventually attend, college, they need to be given the opportunity to see their options. They need to be reminded to dream big.
