When school was going to resume in-person in our district in August, we were challenged to find ways to continue to teach art without sharing materials and supplies. I was able to make a one-time purchase of art journals, one for each of my 180+ students in K-2, so each student would only need to touch his or her own pencil and journal. As the year has continued, I’ve noticed the pride with which kids make and date their drawings. We’ve talked about the value of focused drawing for few minutes at the beginning of each class, how the quiet drawing time helps kids make the transition and get ready to be creative. And as a bonus, at the end of the year, they will have a very nice collection of pencil drawings to keep forever. Arts classes have been shown to boost academic performance in math, science and reading. And low-income students who engage in the arts are more likely to attend and do well in college. Drawing helps kids feel calm and allows them to express their feelings and emotions during these troubling times. I stumbled on to using art journals because of coronavirus, but I’d like to continue using them every year due to the tremendous benefit to the students…… the simple act of drawing quietly and reflecting on various topics that pertain to themselves and their lives.
