The novel choices I have selected are written in poetic form and are easier for students learning English to interact with, while still being engaging and thought provoking. The ideas addressed in the novels provide opportunities for rich discussion in English and also allow students to read independently without being overwhelmed of the number of words in another language flooding the page. Although the topics are essentially American, the themes are about grief, loss, anger, love and social injustice, are all things that any teenager can relate to, especially students who come to America from other countries. Although we have many of the classic American novels for students, it is very intimidating when you are first learning the language to see hundreds of words on a page in another language. These novels in poem form, help take the fear out of reading in English and also build engagement because the topics are so intriguing.
