Our first activity every morning is our Good Morning song, when we greet every student by name at our now too small carpet area and sing "we are glad you are here at school". After our morning greeting, we work on ELA activities, which at this point in the year is a quick read aloud and a target letter of the day (recognition, letter formation and phonics). Later in the day, we all gather at the carpet area to review our calendar. We sing a song for the months in the year, the days of the week, review the weather and are starting to use linking cubes to talk about how many days we have already been in school. Several times a week, we gather for a "Friendship Circle", where we all take turns talking. For the first few days, we would introduce ourselves by name, as we progress throughout the year, our "Friendship Circle" will be used for compliments or to play games. Our current carpet is too small and not clearly defined. If I had a carpet with clearly defined spaces, I could easily direct students to sit on a specific square and use those colored squares to dismiss students from the carpet. This carpet would define a clear aisle for the helper student to point at the months/days as we all sing. We gather several times a day at the carpet, and a clearly defined area would give each student an easy way to know exactly where they should sit and give them a visual reminder of where their space ends and another student's space begins.
