The goal of my project is to have students explore the scientific processes that occur in their local coastal community. The middle school I teach at is located 45 minutes away from the Atlantic Ocean and a large majority of my students spend their weekends at the beach. In our NGSS aligned unit on ecosystems, I would like students to explore the ocean in the classroom by looking at ocean sediments and microfossils, such as foraminifera, and the role they play in this environment. With these microscopes the students would be able to identify species and reconstruct environments using ocean sediments from nearby beaches. The students will also be able to practice implementing real-world science skills including making observations, collecting data and using a microscopes in a lab setting.
