When learning music, people can experience music through a variety of means. From the lyrics we hear on the radio to the rhythms in our heads we tap out on counter tops with nimble fingers, music has an impact in the way we live. As an elementary music teacher, I actively seek out opportunities for my students to experience music in a meaningful way.
The best way for students to learn and experience music is through hands-on opportunities, more specifically, playing instruments. I have seen time and time again how giving a student an instrument opens up a whole new world musically for that student. There are a variety of instruments that people enjoy playing, but the instrument I have observed as being especially impactful is the drum.
Purchasing enough drums for an entire class set in a music room can be expensive. However, there is an alternative option through the use of bucket drumming. Combining a drum head called a "rhythm lid" with a 5 gallon bucket creates an affordable and unique sounding drums. Through this project, I am seeking to get a class set of 30 drumsticks for bucket drums so that my students can continue to explore different kinds of music for years to come.
