Reading good old paperback novels is an experience all young readers should have. In this day of electronics (Kindles), I find that students respond better to holding a novel and turning pages as we delve into historical fiction, general fiction and into the worlds of the authors' imaginations. Teachers know that reading helps improve reading, and although short stories in the literature texts serve a purpose, there is nothing like reading a novel. Please consider helping the students of our school open their minds and learn key strategies through reading novels. This novel project will reach our students in grades 6, 7, and 8. The classes will use these novels to learn about reading as well as writing. The format of reading will be whole class as well as buddy reading and independent reading, depending on the lesson. Reading strategies as well as writing strategies will be infused in the teaching of each novel.
