In order for students to understand math on a deep level, they must immerse themselves in the sensory experience of math. Especially when they are very young or first introduced to a concept, students must be able to see, touch, and feel the mathematical concepts behind the numbers and algorithms. In order to do this, they need manipulatives. To use the manipulatives effectively, they need training to see them as tools rather than toys. Therefore, teachers need copies of these manipulatives that are larger and easily seen to model for students the mathematical behaviors targeted by the use of these manipulatives. Currently, the teachers have limited manipulative resources for their students. I would like to begin a manipulative library to help the teachers have access to math manipulatives. This library would make more efficient and effective use of the manipulatives by making them available to all the teachers in the school on a check out basis instead of leaving them in one or two classrooms for use only a handful of times a year. Using these manipulatives will boost students’ math achievement and engender a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and how math works.
