My students are special needs teens with learning disabilities and pasts full of trauma. I employ restorative practices in my classroom and am converting my room into a trauma sensitive one that minimizes stress and anxiety. Several students lie on the floors during lecture and work usually holed up under my conference table, in the corner or hidden behind other furniture. The carpeting was replaced with hard, cold tile. Having a padded surface with beanbag chairs will help with that. These students come from some very extreme homes and circumstances where they have been terribly abused. A relaxed environment helps kids relax so that their brains are better able to learn. I have chosen blue and green hues which are soothing. My students deserve any little thing that gives them the ability to overcome and learn. I'm willing to try alternative methods to help them do this.
