A major function of play for children is the changing of what may be unmanageable in reality to manageable situations through symbolic representation, which provides children opportunities for learning to cope. Given the opportunity, children will play out their feelings and needs in a manner or process of expression that is similar to that for adults. Child-centered play therapy is a way of being with the child that honors their unique developmental level and looks for ways of helping in the “language” of the child play. This is a great intervention to use with students at an elementary school who need to take a break, regroup, or find a safe place to process difficult feelings or experiences so they can get back to their classroom quickly and ready to learn. Help me help our students play their way back to a healthy state where they can learn to the top of their potential!
