Our students struggle to stay focused and positive throughout the day, giving them positive reinforcers and various calming strategies can give them the ability to refocus quickly and to try again! Art is a great form of expression, a way to connect and to express without words how you are feeling. Many students can't verbal express themselves but with Art they don't have to. It can give them an outlet for the anger, stress and worry. This can get them back into a learning mindset where the little things are little again. Books are an amazing way for students to lose themselves for a little while form the stress of life. As they get lost in a book, their mindset changes from anger, loss, or trauma to an ability to reflect and communicate what they are needing. These can be the first step to helping a student find another way to learn. Interactive social games are so helpful in connecting with students without being invasive. Students so need to know that you are listening and empathize with their point of view. These games give us that ability plus shows students a different perspective without coming across as condescending. These tools will help our students to finding a way to cope with what life throws at them, social and academically.
