My students are studying succession in ecosystems. This project will provide hands-on experience for them as we are unable to observe succession in a natural environment/ setting. The teaching of ecological succession is a problem in biology classes where time is a limiting factor and field work is not practical. The kit will allow students to manipulate variables and observe succession. In a middle school setting, hay infusions can be used to demonstrate ecological succession, because they can easily be kept in the laboratory and student can test different variable with little care. They will be able to also study a variety of microorganisms.
