Students will read "Silver Sparrow" and learn about the process of developing plot, characters, setting, and motif. This text will be used to introduce the students to literary analysis. The figurative language will also serve as inspiration for students as they work on an ongoing memoir project. The novel provides insight into identity formation through the rawness of youth and the complexities of family trees; students can relate to this story. Tayari Jones is one of the writers who mentored me in college, and I look forward to sharing some of the lessons that she taught me as I introduce her writing to my students.
