Metalwork is rewarding and fun, but its also loud, dirty, and hazardous. None of it is possible without access to the proper safety gear and the know-how to use it. Unfortunately, a lot of safety gear is consumable. Ear plugs get dirty, dust masks get clogged, safety glasses get scratched. Due to the nature of what is being protected e.g. lungs, ears, eyes, etc, all of this gear is personal to the individual and must be replaced on a semi-regular basis for sanitary reasons. This puts a serious demand on these items that often exceeds our ability to supply them. The temptation to work without safety gear it is always present. Occasional shortages only promote this which leads to laziness, bad habits, and needless injuries. Any help from Donors Choose will go a long way in keeping our shelves stocked with the appropriate gear that my students need. Staying safe is the only way to work productively in the shop and have a successful career.
