The requested tools will help make gardening easier for our 3 year olds to fifth grade students. Real life experience with our fledgling garden has gotten all our school children outside, engaged with nature and caring about our native plants and animals. Understanding ecosystems and the importance of milkweed for our monarch section brought even our youngest learners to speak up and be protective when our landscape crew mistakenly cleared out this weed. We are back and flourishing with children who will protect our Earth as adults. In addition, the excitement of growing plants throughout their younger grades inspired our fifth graders to propose a pizza garden. We’re working on expanding our experience to include growing edible plants including tomatoes, peppers and herbs to be used in the cafeteria for topping on our school pizza. This supports Michelle Obama’s healthy nutrition for school lunch vision. Students who learn how to grow food also grow as educated and caring adults. As the youngest STEM magnet school we are proud of how our vision is improving our community.
