Listenwise will expose my students to short bits of information to help build their background knowledge - which may be limited in some areas. By aligning selected Listenwise podcasts with curricular units of study, students' comprehension would really be boosted. Another significant factor for how Listenwise will change the learning outcomes for my students is that dozens of studies have documented the importance of two key areas influencing reading level: vocabulary and background knowledge (Shanahan, 2018). Considering students can normally listen to text up to two grade levels higher than their actual reading level, Listenwise affords them the opportunities to access higher-level vocabulary and more complex concepts. Additionally, Listenwise is an excellent tool for all of my ELL students which make up approximately 20% of my classes. Listenwise utilizes the research-based approach - same language subtitling. Their Interactive transcripts, tiered vocabulary and reduced speed audio improve comprehension and expand vocabulary.
