The two books I chose will be used as classroom novels for ninth and tenth grade. I believe there is something powerful about having your own book - not copied pages and not sharing with a partner - to read and interact with, and it is something I want all of my students to experience; not just the ones who can buy their own copy of the book. I want students to come away from my ELA classroom with a book that fuels their interest in reading, rather than extinguishing it. I believe that the books I've selected will help them engage with text in a variety of ways. I want students to see, through the universal themes and messages present in the texts and the unique writing structures, that literature can hold a place in their world. I chose The Book Thief and The House on Mango Street because they are highly acclaimed, high interest novels that have interesting narrative structures. They are also books that appeal to a wide variety of readers. The Book Thief includes illustrations to help readers better visualize complex concepts. It's also narrated by Death, which is universally a pretty cool thing. The House on Mango street is written in short vignettes, which will be perfect for an energetic ninth grade classroom. My titles will also pair with other texts and activities we do in class - for example, The Book Thief will be read in conjunction with Night, and The House on Mango Street will be used as a mentor text for writing autobiographical vignettes. These books will be a vehicle for discussion, reflection, and critical thought. I'm excited to introduce my students to them!
