After borrowing a 3D printer last year the reaction of our students and faculty convinced us that we had a need for one. Students would watch it as it worked to produce large, bright numbers for our nonfiction shelves. Furthermore, we had just the space for the machine where it could be viewed both from inside the library and from the hallway for students passing by. Fascinated by the growing layers of filament, students started to ask about the possibility of printing some of their own ideas--everything from missing game pieces to self portraits. Faculty were also enthusiastic about incorporating design into their lessons and even having their students compete to see which design would make it to the printer. We believe that by providing equipment like this in the library, it serves as a resource to all of our patrons.
