By providing each of my students with their own copy of local historian Henry Stewarts book, I can give these kids a real personal connection to the American History I teach by connecting the content to places they pass everyday. I find that by making History as PERSONAL as possible, students can be engaged at a much deeper level than any broad brush could paint, and these books will enable them to do that in conjunction with our current curriculum. Our community's history is the history of our nation on a micro level that students can walk past, see, touch and smell everyday. From the Reconstruction Era up until the present day, by allowing students to see what these times would have been like for them makes them connect to our country's history in a way that can't be beat.
