Growing up, many of us had a school library that allowed us to check books out whenever we wanted. However, in Philadelphia, not many schools have libraries as a resource and many students in the community have limited access to local libraries due to their inaccessibility to transportation and distance. I have witnessed the positive impacts classroom libraries have on students. Students that had regular access to classroom libraries became eager and self-motivated learners. They were proactively checking out books, not because they had to, but because they wanted to. My goal is to set up a library within my own classroom so that my students have the same opportunities and positive reinforcements I have seen classroom libraries have on students in the past. My students are eager to learn and I believe having a classroom library with resources made available to them will reinforce positive behavior and a motivation to expand their education. Students will learn to value books. There is nothing but joy that comes to my middle school students’ eyes when they have started a book with a series and know that they can complete the series from my resources. With a project like this, I will be able to provide more materials and choices in hopes of capturing the minds of more students. Students who, maybe, have never read a book from front to back. This project will just be one of many small impacts to giving underprivileged students an equitable resource that others may take for granted. I plan on allowing students to check books out so they may enjoy them in the presence of their home.
