One of the goals of my AP Language & Composition class is to help my students become more engaged citizens who make well-informed arguments on the issues that face our nation and world today. Adding this memoir to my Nature Unit will not only expose students to an engaging narrative and beautiful descriptions of the American landscape, but will also help them think about questions such as the effects of the fossil fuel industry on our climate as well as the economy, solutions to our dependence on oil and coal, how to be good stewards of the earth, and how to converse respectfully with those who have opposing viewpoints.
