Students in second grade will locate and identify the seven continents, the five oceans, the poles, and the equator on a world map using the cardinal directions and Dash robots.
The students will work in groups and use the iPads to code a path for the Dash robots to travel to the specified locations on a floor map. They will record audio on the Dash robots so that the robots will announce the location they arrive at each time it moves to a point along the coded path. Students will have the option to record descriptions of the habitats of each continent that will be read by the robot when it lands on those habitats.
Students will work in their groups to write and draw about the various animal habitats the robot visits as it travels. These descriptions will be written detail the water, air, and resources that the geographical locations include for animals that live there.
The second grade students will benefit from the STEM activity because they will solidify their understanding of world geography and geographical tools through a hands-on experience using a large map, iPads and the Dash robots. They will also deepen their understanding of animal habitats and needs by describing various habitats of the Earth that the robots visited.
Their learning can be differentiated as they will have the option to record their information about habitats as well as write and draw about the habitats. The students will learn how to use technology by coding paths and recording audio on iPads for the Dash robots.
