Ms. Liberman and I are starting a middle school volleyball club here at our school in Brooklyn. Middle school sports are a chance for students to learn how to put community over competition and deal with disappointment in a healthy way. We hope to support students with some quality volleyballs and safe equipment so they can participate fully. Middle school sports allow students to build problem solving abilities, self esteem and physical fitness. Research demonstrates a wide range of positive outcomes for children who are physically active, including higher academic achievement, higher likelihood to attend college, increased success in the workplace, lower heath care costs, and decreased risk for obesity and other health problems (Aspen Institute Sport for All Play for Life; Menestrel & Perkins, 2007; Barber et al., 2001; Eccles et al., 2003; Eccles & Barber, 1999).
