These books will help give my students access to enriching classics and contemporary stories. My classroom library is run by a mix of new discoveries and student requests. Our ninth grade "Request A Book" jar is always overflowing with series, authors, and many "Please!"s. Because my classroom library is often the only place students can go to browse books, it is important to have a diverse collection for them - including ones they love to recommend to peers! I've been lucky to build relationships with my students over conversations that go something like, "Miss, I don't need a reward - this book is so great!" This is the kind of enthusiasm I love inspiring. I've worked hard to keep a well-stocked classroom library to help our students embrace our school's 40 Book Challenge, and also to turn them into lifelong readers who see books as a way to embrace new ideas and potential. Books give my students a way to think critically about a world they don't always get a chance to interact with or see and to expand their horizons by forging new connections.
