One thing a number of my students struggle with is reading. As predominantly 11th grade students, many have gone years believing reading— and school as a whole sometimes—"is not for them." When thinking about the future of my students, whether that be higher education or entering the work field, I know reading skills and critical thinking skills grown from reading are essential to being independent leaders who stand up for themselves and others. The first step to helping my students become lifelong readers is providing them with books with characters who look like them. As part of an initiative to build independent reading skills in students, I want to build a classroom library that reflects my student population and provides them with opportunities to see the world from different perspectives, perspectives they may have not known existed. Providing students with interesting, relevant books is the first step in supporting their journey to become lifelong readers and, most importantly, lifelong learners.
