Success in AP math courses requires fluent use of up to date technology. Half of my students have not had graphing calculators available to them over the course of their math careers and have not had the opportunity to see how a graphing calculator can help them to visualize and compare functions. When we're able to use graphing calculators in class, it allows students to confirm their intuitions. By plotting a quick graph of the material that they're analyzing they can see, for instance, when the Squeeze Theorem might be applicable. This saves them time and builds up their confidence. I will use the graphing calculators from this project to even the playing field for my students and make sure that ALL of my AP Calculus students have the opportunity to use these powerful tools on a daily basis. By building this daily familiarity, my students will get the leg up that they need to succeed on their AP Exams and to earn the college credit that they deserve for their hard work in tackling college level math in high school. Unlike online graphing systems, modern graphing calculators are allowed in testing situations and are an excellent way for all students - no matter their economic background - to thrive in a modern high stakes testing environment.
