This past month we have been studying immigrant stories, from all different genres, in preparation for my students to write their own personal narratives. We have been making connections to the stories we read, and by doing so, I have been getting to know my students; I have listened to their immigrant stories. All of my students are English language learners from varying countries, races, languages, cultures, religions, etc. Each of their stories is unique. We have used the words refuge and refugee more this month than I can say I have used my entire 41 years! After reflecting on our readings and conversations, I want to create a classroom reading refuge for my students. I want them to feel like our classroom is just an extension of their home. I want to create that safe warm feeling you get when you know you are home. I chose teaching as my profession, not knowing that there is way more to it than reading, writing, and arithmetic. It's about supporting others in what they need in order for them to be as successful as they can be. So I ask you to help support me supporting others. I ask you to pay it forward in order to allow an immigrant teenager coming to this country a refuge in an otherwise chaotic time of their life. We all have an immigrant story in our life, whether it be of this generation or many generations past. Immigrants and their stories are what make America great.
