Genetic mutations, gene alterations, DNA evidence, and genetically modified foods are just a few examples of how biochemistry is affecting society. It is important for students to have first hand knowledge of how DNA functions and the role it plays in their lives. In this DNA extraction lab students will use a simple and quick method to isolate DNA and observe its physical characteristics using a variety of sources, including onion, liver, thymus gland, wheat germ, and others. My students will be able to isolate and observe DNA from onion cells and describe its appearance. They will also identify advances and uses of biotechnology and debate the risks and benefits.
