In order for my students to develop their interest in reading and apply skills taught in class, I have selected a high-interest book to be our first novel study of the year, The Devil's Arithmetic, by Jane Yolen. Unfortunately, there are no class sets available at the school. The Devil's Arthimetic follows the story of a present-day Jewish girl who is transported back in time to 1942 as her Grandmother, and experiences first-hand the atrocities of the Holocaust. Many of the struggles Hannah encounters throughout the novel parallel many situations my students face on a daily basis. Prejudice, injustice, and resiliency are just a few of the major themes The Devil's Arithmetic covers. Please consider making a donation to help me off-set the costs of purchasing a class-set of books for this novel study.
