My students face a host of economic and learning challenges. Milwaukee, Wisconsin is the fourth-poorest city in the nation, and has the most severe crisis of literacy of all school districts in the united states. My students' families incomes uniformly fall below the poverty line. My students have emotional-behavioral disabilities, cognitive disabilities, learning disabilities, and other health impairments-like attention-deficit-hyperactivity disorder or lead poisoning- that make school challenging. Because their reading skills are underdeveloped, they rarely experience success in school. However, with scaffolds and supports, and when held to high expectations, they can and will make huge reading gains this year and beyond, and graduate high school college-ready!
