Literature circles and Socratic seminars, writing and reading projects that will motivate students to read and truly connect the literature with their lives are what my students need most. Books can and do make a difference when they are engaging, relevant, and provided in a context that is both personal and social. Good literature, in the right hands, can teach history, mathematics, science, philosophy, theology, empathy, and the fallibility of humans. What a great way for students to learn. They deserve timely books and a great selection of things to promote lifelong reading habits. While there are many, many more books on my list to build up a classroom library worthy of my students, I plan to start here.
