I would love to get quality instruments into the hands of the kids in Youngstown City Schools. Music and art in the lower grades provide a foundation for a love of art and culture for a lifetime. Some of these kids would never have the opportunity to learn an instrument outside of a school situation. Ukuleles are easy to learn. Kids have success early and feel a real sense of accomplishment. Students who learn chords on the ukulele, can transfer those same techniques to any other string instrument they would like to play in the future. Instrumental excellence opens many doors to possible career paths. Studies have also shown that students who participate in instrumental music in secondary schools perform better in math and reading on standardized tests.
