In my middle school General Music class, my kids are often not motivated to do work, because they did not choose this class and their grade will not impact their high school GPA. This presents a unique challenge to me, engaging my students in learning something they will enjoy and maybe even use later. With your help, my kids can be active learners of a fun skill that could turn into a life-long passion. They are a unique bunch who learn best by doing, and are hungry to do something that feels "real". Teaching them a real skill, one that they can show off and be creative with, one that lets them sound like "real" musicians (if they work at it), is the key to engaging them in learning. Teaching my kids how to play the ukulele, use it in songwriting, create interesting melodies with fun accompaniments, could spark an interest in them. They may continue playing ukulele, or decide to pick up the guitar, or other stringed instruments. It gives them a canvas on which to experiment with songwriting. It is a simple instrument that could unlock a million creative possibilities in their minds. Help my kids in their creative pursuits.
