My students are amazing. They are fourth graders, largely from Latino backgrounds, living below the poverty level in New York. My students are Spanish, Arabic and English speakers. They love everything from soccer to hip hop. My students are thirsty for knowledge and are constantly asking questions about the world around them. They want to know why things work, how they work, and what is going on in the news. Our pre-k through fifth grade school is full of students who are eager to learn and hungry for information, but are uninspired by the books around them.
