Got water? Most kids and teens don't drink enough water or even "any water" in their day to day lives. Not drinking enough water can result in cognitive impairment and manifest in physical complaints such as headaches, stomach aches, and nausea. It is difficult for students to obtain water in our school, as the building is old and access is limited to water fountains - some of which do not work. Schools simply need to provide kids access to clean drinking water at all times! At our school's Water Club, students meet every other day after their lunch period to drink water as a community and to discuss the importance of staying adequately hydrated and how this simple deed impacts our health and well being. We gather together, prep our hands with hand sanitizer, pour water into paper cups from our Brita Water Pitcher and we talk about the benefits of drinking water, why water is so important, and we take a pledge to drink 8 glasses daily. We also socialize and giggle about our day, and how much we sometimes do not like drinking water, and what we can do to make it more enjoyable.. The students compare days when they do drink enough water vs. days that they do not drink enough, and how that makes them feel physically. The purpose of water club is to improve the health and well being of these identified students - reducing Health Room visits thus keeping these students engaged and successful in the classroom. No one is turned away from joining "Water Club," all students interested may participate.
