My 6th grade class is still developing foundational reading skills; at the same time, they must learn how to operate different forms of technology to assure success in their future academic and professional lives. However, the ability of students to gain these essential skills varies depending on their socioeconomic status. In my class, several students lack access to a computer at home, and many of them cited less than ten or five books within their homes. For this reason, I aim to provide my students will tablets so as to make texts and technology more available to them. Studies indicate that tablets increase student engagement, while also familiarizing them with basic computer skills. Students will be given out tablets to use in class during independent reading time, as well as for at home use. The use of e-books will further serve to be part of a school-wide effort at reducing paper use.
