Every single student learns in a different way. My job as a teacher is to uncover the ways each one of my 100 students learns best, so that they can be successful in school and beyond. The key to this success: differentiate my instruction. I have selected two different reading levels through the graphic novel and novel to meet the needs of my students. Due to the lack of school funding, it is impossible to obtain the latest texts or supply texts to the 1,000 students in our building. These classroom sets of novels and graphic novels of The Lightning Thief will allow every single student in my class be successful. Through reading this Percy Jackson novel, students will be exploring the theme of discovering identity and learning Greek mythology-two important goals and outcomes of the 7th grade Massachusetts curriculum. Reading allows our students to connect with the characters, think outside the box and expand their imagination throughout each and every chapter. Without reading, students imagination and analysis of life and its meaning are limited. They need these experiences through words, pictures, and discussion to foster their love for learning and passion for reading-maybe they will even discover they are a half-blood like Percy Jackson!
