My students are 1st and 2nd graders who are highly motivated to learn grade-level content in English and Spanish. My classroom has a diverse mixture of backgrounds and ethnicity's. This is one of the reasons why my students learn curriculum standards in two languages. Learning about other countries and customs helps calm the tension between cultures. My students need to hear accurate Spanish in order to improve their reading fluency, expression, tone and comprehension in a foreign language. Our current listening center consists of broken headphones and an old cd player. During listening centers my students spend more time adjusting the headphones and restarting the cd player than listening to the books on cd. If our class had a cd player and headphone set that worked well, my students would be able to listen to nonfiction and fiction stories from all genres and learn how to read fluently in Spanish on their own. Listening to the stories over again would also help with comprehension.
