These donated funds would be spent on as many math manipulatives as possible. Currently, I have many manipulatives to enhance my students learning, but to continue to build a well-equipped learning environment items that are reusable such as the write and wipe pocket and number line sets and the probability spinners make for a great learning experience. A simple fold-able made from construction paper serves as a constant study guide or aids in the way a student can “show” their work. Many of my students (140 plus) are below grade level and the objective at hand is to move them forward by building foundational math skills while at the same time introducing grade-level content. No one extended project will be created rather daily projects (learning tasks) using manipulatives to enhance student learning letting students construct concepts that enable logical reasoning will be performed. Some may see this as just “regular” teaching, but I challenge that thinking. The days of spewing information outstanding at the head of the class are gone. Society has changed and so have teacher instructional practices (or at least they should have). Teachers are expected to model/demonstrate, facilitate understanding through questioning and probing, and offers ongoing opportunities to perform, all the while relating what is learned to real-world experiences. And, according to Sutton & Krueger students who are presented with the opportunity to use manipulatives report that they are more interested in mathematics. A long-term interest in mathematics translates to increased mathematical ability (Sutton & Krueger, 2002). As you know these types of supplies/manipulatives are not routinely budgeted for or distributed by secondary schools. We are thankful for our operational supplies and paper even tough strictly curtailed, but the monies from these donors could and would promote student achievement. Thank you for your consideration.
