The goal of my project is to provide students with greater accessibility to high-interest novels. Many students that I talk with do not have books to read at home and don't want to be judged by others who might see reading as a "nerdy" thing to do with their time. Some do not want friends or family to know that they identify with a particular character or theme of a book. My heart breaks when students ask me to save or hide their book for the next occasion that they get some down time at school to read something of their choice. My aim is to provide a judgement-free library that students can visit to choose books to borrow and read when they feel safe to do so. My small library will also contain comfy seating, lighting, and materials to express their thoughts and reactions to their books via prose or in an artistic manner.
