Flexible seating is a perfect way to allow students to take charge of their learning and helps them create a positive working environment for themselves. In my class I actively promote the idea of a positive environment for students and by allowing students choice in where they sit they are much more likely to "buy in" to whatever activity or project we may be working on. Making sure students are comfortable in class, especially if they may be uncomfortable in other places, goes a long way in getting students to achieve higher in their academic standards. Currently my classes are focused on standards like NVAC SS.9-12.US.26 and SS.9-12.US.18 which help them learn and understand about how diverse groups experience different socio-economic issues and are often denied opportunities, both institutionally and informally. Often times discussing topics like this can cause some discomfort among students so by allowing them to have flexible seating like yoga balls students have a physical outlet for the energy that they often have while discussing these topics. I greatly believe sitting in hard, uncomfortable chairs all day is one of the reasons why students lose interest in the topics of their classes and by allowing them different seating opportunities they will be more excited to learn about these new topics throughout the year!
