When the students read The Alchemist they will travel with Santiago, a young man their own age, from Spain through Africa on a quest for treasure. Santiago discovers that happiness is not an object to be possessed but something more. As Santiago works through obstacles and challenges on his journey, he reflects. The students will reflect upon their own journey for what is precious and record their thoughts in the notebook. Reading and writing are not done in isolation but go hand in hand. The Alchemist lends to in-depth conversations and the notebooks will help students organize their thoughts. Practice leads to thoughtful expression and clarity.
