I would like to build Free Voluntary Reading and Literature Circles into my curriculum with copies of sixteen different thought-provoking books that are written for young adults. I know that this is one of the most powerful ways for my heritage students to learn the conventions of the Spanish language, but most importantly to become lifelong readers. Last year, I overheard a student telling another student "I don't even like reading at all, but I can't put this book down." Of course, that book, "Yo no soy tu perfecta hija mexicana" is on my list! I want all my students to have that "aha" moment, and at the same time implement critical reading skills that will serve them in their other high school literature classes and beyond.
