What is academic language, you may ask? Academic language acquisition takes much longer for an English learner (EL) to master than social, everyday language. You guessed it, academic language refers to the language of subject areas such as reading, math, science and social studies. The four domains of language are listening, speaking, reading and writing. As ELs, my students need the tools and materials necessary to increase their academic English language knowledge while also preparing them for the yearly English language proficiency assessment that is required by Federal law. English learners need practice, practice, practice! Practice speaking and listening to each other and through the use of technology, as well as reading and writing. We have found that many of our students become shy when speaking into the microphone and struggle with writing using academic language. My goal is to provide plenty of opportunities for my ELs to practice. The index cards, sticky notes, hi-liters, and paper, etc. will benefit my ELs because they will be able to use these tools and supplies while reading and writing. We will be able to create individual and class books from their writing. They will be able to use the headsets to record the reading of their own written work and listen to their recordings. With these additional supplies, my students will get the academic language practice they need! Thank you for any consideration you give my request!
