For some students, a school can be an overwhelming environment. Currently, our students can choose from a limited number of spaces in which to take breaks and calm down. They often end up laying down in the health room since it is one of the quietest places in the school. We have noticed a significant difference in our students' behaviors when they have a quiet and calm environment in which to settle down. They are often able to return to class quicker and be more productive. Otherwise, they seem overloaded with the things around them. We want to alleviate this overload by providing a calming space. These items will provide our students with a safe and calming space to relax when school gets overwhelming. We want to provide a tent that will act as a safe place that protects them from outside stimuli. This space will be filled with resources such as sensory pillows, ambient noise machines, lights, and weighted blankets. Bean bag chairs will provide them with a comfortable alternative seating choice. They will also have the opportunity to continue their work in the space with lap desks. The lap desks are a comfortable and light-weight alternative to traditional desks or awkward clipboards.
